Created in 1620 as the garden of a villa for Asano Nagaakira, the first lord of the Hiroshima Asano domain, Shukkeien has watched over the city for more than four centuries. Its design is attributed to Ueda Soko, a senior retainer of the domain who was also renowned as a master of the tea ceremony.
Its name evokes the idea of gathering mountains, water, and distant scenery into a smaller landscape. Ponds, bridges, wooded hills, and carefully composed views unfold as you walk, allowing each season to reveal a different expression of Hiroshima.
The garden was devastated by the atomic bombing in 1945. Restoration began in 1949 and continued for approximately thirty years, gradually returning the historic landscape to the people of Hiroshima.
We chose Shukkeien for more than its beauty. An unhurried walk before lunch offers an opportunity to experience Hiroshima’s history, resilience and enduring calm, carrying that quiet impression into the meal that follows.
